Setting Up Your Workflow Preferences in Filterpixel
Watch the quick video above, or follow the steps below. Rating preferences control how FilterPixel labels your culled photos — as star ratings, color labels, or tags — so the results land in your catalog exactly the way you like to work.
Step 1 — Open Preferences
From the Home screen, click Preferences in the left sidebar. The "What's your work preference?" window opens.
Step 2 — Pick your rating style
⭐ Star (default) — Culling results are written as star ratings. Each category has its own row — Best, Review, and Rejected — and you can click the stars to adjust how many each category receives (for example Best = 5★, Review = 3★, Rejected = 1★, or any mapping you prefer).
🎨 Colors — Prefer color labels? Each category gets its own color instead. Pick a color for Best, Review, and Rejected — just note that each category needs a unique color; FilterPixel won't let you use the same value twice.
🏷️ Tags — The simplest option: categories are written as plain tags, with no stars or colors involved.
Step 3 — Save
Click Save Preference. From now on, every cull is labeled in your chosen style — and it carries through to your exports (XMP metadata, Lightroom, and CSV reports all follow the same mapping).
Good to know
- You can come back and change the style anytime — just open Preferences again.
- If you're unsure, stick with Star: it matches how Lightroom and most culling workflows filter photos out of the box.
- The mapping matters most when exporting — see How to export your images from FilterPixel for how ratings travel with your files.
